The small village of Juzcar, in Spain’s Malaga region, has recently been painted blue as part of a global promotion for the Sony Pictures film “The Smurfs 3D”.
Juzcar is a peaceful, traditional “pueblo blanco” village, located in the Genel Valley region of Andalucia. It boasts a population of just 250, and yet Sony has selected it as the perfect location for the world premiere of its new film “The Smurfs 3D”. Locals were delighted, especially since the news meant their small village would become a temporary tourist attraction, but their fame and fortune came at a price: Sony requested that the entire settlement, including its historic church be painted blue, to resemble the smurfs’ fantasy village.
In preparation for the big premiere on June 16, 12 unemployed locals armed with various painting tools used 4,200 liters of paint to turn Juzcar into a real life Smurf village. There have been no complaints regarding the sudden transformation, and considering tourists have already begun arriving, the locals are more than happy with the change. Although Sony has agreed to turn the village to its former white glory, locals are now considering leaving the town as it is now, hoping Juzcar could become a permanent tourist spot. It sounds like Chefchaouenmight have some serious competition.

In the 1980s some entrepreneurs in Ghana invested in vhs video equipment and brought movies to Ghana. They toured the country and brought the magic of film to towns and remote villages many of which did not have electric power (a portable generator was used). The movies were shown in restaurants, school houses or outdoors and in many cases introduced movies to people for the first time.
To promote the films local artists were commissioned to do original movie posters. These posters were typical oil paintings that were rolled up and taken from town to town. The artist recalled scenes from memory but in some cases had not seen the film at all.
Each poster was unique and generally no copies were printed. In the 1990s television became widespread in Ghana and the portable theaters faded away. Since then Ghanaian hand painted movie posters have become popular with collectors around the world.

Brooklyn-based Ben Grasso paints these wonderful suspended architectural structures frozen somewhere between construction and deconstruction. It’s rare that I encounter oil paintings and have a strong reaction, Grasso’s work is definitely an exception. Via his web site:
Grasso’s paintings are feats of engineering. His is an architecture of the apocalypse, but one whose seams thread shapes we can as yet not fully determine. Excitement and surprise are as much part of this wildly imagined landscape as is a more measured, even nightmarish, uncertainty. Here the whacky, the sublime, and the catastrophic converge upon us unremittingly, but not without grace.

Tomasz Urynowicz, a 37-year-old art lover from Nowa Huta, Poland, has fallen in love with a young brown-haired girl hanging laundry in one of his paintings.
Urynowicz first saw the artwork painted by Antoni Maria Kwiek in 2001, in a art gallery and was fascinated by the beauty of the girl it portrayed. He bought it on the spot and spent the last decade searching for the girl. He hoped his neighbors might know who she was or where the artist who painted her in 1955 was located. “I just wanted to meet her, sit down and have coffee and a chat – to see who she is and what her life has been like,” he explains, but says he would have been happy enough to just track down Kwiek.
After years of failure tracking down the girl who “has brown hair that shimmers in the sun”, Tomasz is now looking for a priest who will agree to marry him with the painted version of the girl of his dreams. “I don’t know what the laws on this sort of thing are in Poland. But if I can’t do it here I’ll go somewhere else and do it,” he says, and 10 years of searching tell me he means it. If he actually goes through with this unusual wedding, I’m pretty sure he’ll be the first man in the world to marry a painting.

Earlier we have seen the amazing picture gallery of artist James Kuhn, who painted his face with a different design every day for one year. Now we have '2nd. 365 Transformations', "I had so much fun last year with the first 365 faces, that I am starting another 365 transformations!" - James Kuhn. What we have here are a few of his pictures from the 2nd. 365 Transformations (between 20 May 2009 and 31 Jul 2009), and there are lots of great ideas to be seen and we are sure these too would be much more interesting and amazing like the first series.

"Aqueous" by Mark Mawson is a creative and beautiful series of photographs of different colored paints being dropped into water. Most of his work is really impressive, but 'Underwater' and 'Aqueous' are the ones which really made an impression on us. Check the rest of his work here.
